   I must say - having ignored this request for over 8 years is a bit disheartening. Especially when this functionality is no longer cutting edge.

   How do we move this basic functionality to the top of the list?

   As Reuben said 5.5 years ago, having the ability to include more than the default 4 merge fields is extremely helpful in terms of personalization. Limiting the merge capabilities restricts outbound email to looking like so much spam - which does nothing to differentiate us from our competitors.
